DIARY OF A GIRL-NEXT-DOOR HEAVY METAL NOVELIST

April 1, 2005
I got a boost in my web stats today from a student at my day job who posted a link to my site on a bulletin board he subscribes to. One of the respondents suggested that I had probably been intimate with all four members of the band. I should probably be insulted, but there's something misguidedly flattering about his hypothesis. For the record, I've never met Ace Frehley. Silly college students.

My book didn't arrive today, so I'm going to camp out at my office tomorrow until Mr. Postman comes to the door. I still have lots of work to catch up on anyway before I head to Nashville.

I received a very nice email from the promoters of the Cincinnati KISSfest today. They wondered if I would mind moving my table so I'd be snuggled between Bruce Kulick and Mr. Speed. Oh gosh, I suppose I could do that, especially since my new table will be next to an electrical outlet. I can flirt with rockers AND fight gingivitis with my electric toothbrush. One step closer to rock & roll heaven...

A couple months ago I got sick of paying a cable bill when I almost never watched tv. No ill effects --- until this morning. I'm one of those nerdy travelers. I make sure I get to the airport way in advance so I don't have to stress about anything. Today was no exception. I checked in at the ticketing counter, and the guy said he didn't think my baggage would make the flight. "What?!" I couldn't believe it. "I don't leave for another hour and fifteen." Two seconds later, I was sprinting to the terminal to get the last seat on my flight

You see, people who watch television know that today is when you set your clocks ahead by an hour. Since I'm a travel geek, I still made the flight, albeit without luggage. Maybe I need to be a tv geek, though, as I see that the early nerd gets the window seat.

My manuscript delivery is all messed up. I'm in Nashville now sans Won't Get Fooled Again. I really wanted to show it off this week, and hopefully I'll have at least one day with it in my hands before I head up above the Mason/Dixon again.

Nashville is my kind of town. I wore my ubiquitous black boots and my rarely-worn black cowboy hat, thinking I'd look like a fool, but I've never denied my poseurism. Instead, I look like the damn locals (the cool ones, anyway).

I talked to David the dude from the publishing house today. He promises that no matter what I'll have books at the Cincy KISS Expo. Meanwhile, the prototype is still somewhere between California and Lancaster. Just like my heart.

Nashville is a city that has made many a wannabee starlet's dream come true. As I gazed at the stage of the Grand Ole Opry today, I could feel the magic. My morning, afternoon and evening were spent with mentors who have shaped my philosophies about higher education and built my passion for the liberal arts mission. They all but interrogated me about my own dreams and, like my family, urged me to follow a certain path, but not necessarily one people would relate to academia. They were right about everything else...

To keep my grounded, I have KISS Nation working with me on a project that will blow people's minds (if we do it right). This Saturday will be the first step toward our collective dream. Stay tuned for details.

Do I sound like GeneSimmons.com right now? I can't spill the beans quite yet. More info on the way. I'll tell you more when I can.

So sad to leave Nashville, but this morning, I held Won't Get Fooled Again in my arms for the first time. It's a real live book.

KISS Nation production has been pushed to next weekend. Thank goodness. I have a book on the way.

I made a major life decision today that is terrifying and wonderful. I'll make it public very soon. Right now, I have a lot of work to do.

My Aunt Paula a,k.a. Tootsie Chase was in town for dinner tonight. She is plugging along with her writing pursuits, and providing ample inspiration for her novice niece. (continue)
