This morning, I went to a local Career Day to talk to 5th graders about the glam life of an author. It was probably the most impoverished school I've visited, but they were by far the smartest and most engaged kids I've met since I joined the community career group. They were pretty shocked that the opening line in Won't Get Fooled Again is "Damn it!" and a couple of the small groups asked for my autograph. This is the life!

Speaking of fantastic opening lines, I can't beat that of Jessica Jiji. The first line in her book is, "Blow job!" I picked up Diamonds Last Forever this afternoon and I can't wait to dig in!

Dear Richie Sambora:

What the heck, man? I know that each time I start dating someone, some other temptation pops up. Sometimes it's a former hot lover who's back in town for a visit, or the cute guy I've been eying for months... I've always considered it a little practical joke from God - or a cosmic test. I was feeling a little complacent because my current romance has not been challenged. Did I ever underestimated the Almighty!

Well, this time I must be hooked, because my first thought when I saw the news of your divorce tonight was, "Doggone it. I really thought those two would go the distance." I guess I passed the test. Now, don't think for one minute that I will shirk my duties as Kissing/Casting Consultant when the film version of Won't Get Fooled Again starts preproduction someday and you are in the running for the role of Jackson Hellam. Just remember that it's all professional. No funny business, mister. I expect nothing but businesslike screen test making out. Got it?

Colette

**Editor's Note: Honey, don't worry. I'll make sure you're also a consultant and that Gillian Anderson tests for the Suzanne Curtis role.

Days are flying right now. Like a diva, I'm commuting between two homes. Unlike big-time divas, though, instead of L.A. and NYC, I'm hauling my ass between Upstate NY and Southern Pennsylvania. Ironically, I get more work done as a novelist when I'm up north, but I don't have the ability to update my blog. Until now, that is. I think I've figured out a way to update my website from the road, so I can keep myself on task with my second novel, Nothing to Lose.

I'll be working diligently on my 2006 Valentine over the next couple days. I've had to make the decision to send electronic missives this year, but perhaps it will allow me some creative opportunities that paper letters did not. (continue)
