Diary of a Girl-Next-Door Heavy Metal Novelist

June 16, 2003

Since I've had little luck contacting the copyright attorney I like so much, I got online last night to investigate some music clearinghouses. It looks fairly easy to use them to obtain the rights to the music we need for the documentary.
I think I'm going to have to watch the film and time exactly how much of each song the docu-man used, then I can send in the information for a free estimate from the clearinghouse folks.

Today, I wrote a kick-ass press release and I wrote a letter to Love Gun (my favorite local tribute band) to find out if they're playing Halloween weekend. If so, their gig would be the perfect place to hold a post-screening docu-party. If I find out soon, I'll be ready to send out my press release pronto.

"What's up with the book?" you ask. There is a great misconception out there that it's already published. No. Right now I'm looking for an agent to represent me to the big publishing houses. I'm feeling very confident. I'm afraid to say much more. I have a lot of superstitious feelings about it, so I'm just going to ride out my optimism.

I'm getting the hang of this new web design software. See my cool banner? I need a flashing ad like that splashed across my breasts when I meet KISS in August. Yeah, that's just what I need.

I retooled my press release a little and I'm pretty sure I heard it sizzle. I also got a couple emails from my Love Gun connection, Lori, letting me know that my most excellent favorite tribute band is playing the same night as the documentary premiere (woo hoo!); that they have gigs several times in the near future (woo hoo!); and they noticed I have a picture of another tribute band on my front page (booooo). I quickly added a Love Gun link to my Friends of KISSfiction page and promised that as soon as I have a decent picture with the band, I'll post it. I don't want to mess things up with these guys (at least not until I have my way with their hottie "Paul Stanley" (woo hoo!).

I got home last night just in time to get a message from the docu-man letting me know KISS was going to be on the premiere episode of the Orlando Jones show. I can't believe I'm going to see them in person. I still need a gimmick that will make them remember me. Ideas?

I leave for Florida to see my sister/editor/docu-caterer in the morning. I'll try to update here if I can.

Don't think for one second that just because I took time off from my electronic playground I wasn't actively working on the KISSfiction project. Quite the opposite- I'm as excited as ever about my progress. I'm sitting on the airplane on my way home right now, taking a break from writing a detailed outline of the sequel to Won't Get Fooled Again (currently called Got to Choose). I'm finding some stuff I've been trying to work through in my life is perfect material, and it cheers me up when I can lay the junk on my book characters to let them resolution.

Last night, I met with my sister/editor/caterer/host to brainstorm ideas for the docu-premiere. We found some awesome ways to work through key challenges such as:
* extremely limited space in the screening venue
* a small budget coupled with an audience that could be packed with hungry college students
* a desire to serve refreshments that have a KISS theme
This is going to be the sexiest rock 'n' roll movie premiere my day job has ever seen.

What else, you ask? I got my first professional pedicure.

Rained off the beach every darn day of my vacation?

No problem. Despite my mutantly small feet, I felt glamour all over.

Unlike most days, I have about zero desire to update my journal, but I accomplished a lot in the past two days. For one, I created a webpage for the documentary premiere. You can see a draft here. I'm really getting the hang of my new web software, and I'm loving it. I sent out emails to the people whose interviews made the final cut in the film. As it turns out, the premiere is right around Leathur's birthday, so she may come to Lancaster to celebrate!

With some editing help from my sister/editor and the docu-man, the movie press release is almost ready to go. Even though the weather was finally warm enough for me to put the top down on my car and ride around all day, I still found a few minutes to look up the address to send press notices to People Magazine and the Today Show. Matt and Katie have to love me.

I sent music copyright information out to a clearinghouse company when I got home yesterday. Let's hope I don't have to sell my car, soul or self to pay for the rights to Strutter.

I don't like the clearinghouse company I contacted. They gave a free estimate on their service fees, but not the cost of the licenses. I suppose if they gave away that detail (which seems to be incredibly difficult to find), I could go out on my own. Oh well. That's what I'm going to do anyway. It's time for a plan b. I'll take care of that in the morning. As luck would have it, I received an email this morning about a possible consulting job. The one I did last month paid for a big chunk of the documentary production. Perhaps the timing is fortuitous.

It is now hotter in PA than it is in FL. I can't believe my luck. I spent today shopping for things to make my life more organized. My favorite purchase was a set of hat boxes I'll use to hide all my assorted scraps of bullshit and feel Parisienne at the same time. I also bought a set of bed risers. I guess you're never too old to pull the hide-it-under-the-bed stunt - except this time I won't be grounded for it. (continue)

I mean like do ya REALLY love me?
