Diary of a Girl-Next-Door Heavy Metal Novelist

May 11, 2003

Last night, I dreamt that my friend Lisa, whom I've known since high school, came to town and went out to see KISS tribute band, Cold Gin, with my rock friend Heidi-va and me. Somehow in the dream, the hottie "Paul Stanley" from the infamous Love Gun
Valentine/lucky red sweater show turned out to be the front man of Cold Gin. He bought drinks for my friends and me and rocked our worlds. Lisa had not known any KISS music prior to her indoctrination, but the rock & roll seduction didn't take long. During a break, the wife of "Peter Criss" asked me why I'd disappeared so quickly after the February gig, because didn't I know that "Paul" had asked about me? (I'm telling you, this dream was hot.) I recalled that I'd played the role of dutiful girlfriend that night. Now that I'm single, could she hook me up, I asked. In my dreams, the answer is always yes. At the end of Cold Gin's second set, Lisa got up on stage to dance, and "Paul" invited me to sing. Of course I f'ing sang! When the show ended, I sat down at the bar next to "Paul" and saw on the  television overhead that the Sixers had won game 3 in their playoff series.

Was it a dream or just living the fantasy? Sometimes in my life, the line is blurred to the point of Who Cares.

It was back to work on my manuscript last night. Unfortunately, I'm in the throes of Sixer playoff season, so I'm not making tremendous progress.

I got my laptop back today. It has a new hard drive, and it's acting a little funny. I'll take it back to the tech folks tomorrow. One of the problems I'm having is the same as at my day job computer. Some of the pages will update, and some will not. I think it's time to make the move to a real website. Geocities has been wonderful (and free), but I'm ready for the big time.

I can't wait to upload my manuscript tonight. I feel like my computer has KISSfiction amnesia and it needs to be reminded of its greater purpose in this world.

I made slow work of my last-minute pre-mailing editing job last night. I seemed to get carried away with a daydream (not unlike the dream I had Saturday night), and ended up calling my
sister/editor. Tonight, I promise to get through 22 pages.

I'm having lunch this week with
Colleague Melissa, who sent me an email yesterday to tell me she loved my May 11 entry. She also mentioned I looked hot that night in the smokin' jeans I wore with my motorcyclette t-shirt. My goal is to spend our lunch date making her feel as great about herself as she helps me feel.

I didn't quite do 22 pages last night, despite my promise. Full disclosure was not my thing, apparently. Still, I made progress and will continue. The truth is, I've been spending all my time on this website, trying to make simple changes. I need to refocus. Last year at the graduation ceremony at my day job, I took my
Guide to Literary Agents and a highlighter pen. This year, it'll be something similar.

Last night, as I finished up my editing, I remembered the fire I had last year for writing. I was in the middle of the scene in which
Suzanne Curtis meets Jackson Hellam, and I ran out of pages. I was pissed! I loved what I wrote. I'm still tweaking, but I just got to the part in which my writing had started to flow. I'm getting back to my old self. In the meantime, I mailed off Aunt Paula's manuscript to earn some good author karma.

Colleague Melissa, I enjoyed our lunch date! You're a great friend.

And Heidi... Yeah. Count on more fun this summer.

Yeah, yeah. The Sixers lost last night. Maybe it's a good thing for KISSfiction - no more guilt-free 3-hour stretches in front of the tv for me. But, c'mon.

I had a
band rehearsal this morning. Somehow, I've transformed into a tympani player, and I have a cool solo. Too bad I can't tune the drums for shit.

I've been working on my manuscript this week, and as I input the changes I made, I realize that I liked it the way it was. Maybe I'm just wasting time out of fear. Luckily, I had another lunch with Melissa, and she smacked some sense into me. AND we had lunch at one of the settings from my novel. It was perfect. Tonight, I'm preparing my materials. I also booked a flight to sunny FL to see sister/editor and sister-in-law. Watch out, Jeb. The Shaw women are takin' over.
