Diary of a Girl-Next-Door Heavy Metal Novelist

(continued) October 2, 2002
One of the staff photogs,
Cookie, posted a message on the Guestbook tonight about a send-off party! How cool would that be? I have fantasies of TRL-type mania, but a few friendly faces would be intimate and special. If the press doesn't cover this, I guess I just don't know what real news is.

International Jill is pollinating KISSfiction friends' websites now. She is so supportive! If you haven't checked out kurtdoan.com, you should see what he's got goin' on over there. p.s. If you want your site listed on my soon-to-come "Friends of KISSfiction Page" let me know.

Interesting anecdote: Tonight at a
day job staff meeting, we did a team bonding activity offering positive feedback to everyone and I had a secret fear that in the past year I may have given up professional credibility for KISSfiction caricurism (yes, that's a word). I felt much better at the end of the activity. Thanks for the feedback, all.

Talked to the
rocku-man today and formed a clearer vision of the film. I feel a total trust that he gets it. I also got a call from the fellow I talked to a couple weeks ago about doing some media research for me, and he's interested in (and aggressively pursuing) a full-fledged press agent role with me. Before I go too far with him, I have to figure out A) what I need, B)whether it's enough to keep him busy, and C) what I can afford financially. I know this guy has balls, and I recognize there is power in having someone else call to say "I represent soon to be published writer/slash/celebrity-writer Colette Shaw." I think one of the reasons my message to kissasylum.com isn't posted is because I sent it myself. Dammit. I want to be on KISS's radar screen!Stay tuned.

What's up with y'all in the
Guestbook? Send-off party? Fan club? Last night, I laughed to myself - "I'm a rock star and I don't even know how to play guitar." Who knew I'd achieve that old retired dream? Thanks for the constant encouragement. Seriously. This machine wouldn't run without the kommunity.

I printed up the KISSfiction staff i.d. photos for the front stage passes tonight. Over the weekend - fliers, t-shirts, laundry, shopping for an Expo outfit (black, perhaps?) and naps. I think I'm going to give myself (and
Secret Reader) a break and not worry about taking a manuscript with me to Baltimore. The naps and the new clothes deserve full attention. Vogue says a girl-next-door heavy metal novelist must have just the right top to match her snakeskin pants.

The day job whupped my ass today, so I haven't gotten much done tonight except daydream about sleeping.

After work, I took my front stage pass supplies to the day job's lamination machine to seal my work in plastic (I supplied my own laminants, if you're questioning my ethics right now). Anyway, even though I followed the instructions, I quickly did my best to destroy the machine. Thanks, Lucy & R. Kelley for saving the machine and my morale when I'm sure you wanted to hit the road on this Friday night.

Reader, Joel, wrote in to question my Oct. 2 use of the word "caricurism." He is correct. I meant to use the word "caricaturism" and I still claim it as a real word. Thanks for the sharp eye, Joel - and welcome. Are you a writer yourself?

Now my favorite moment of the day: My beloved
Aunt Paula emailed to tell me that she was going to the mall to purchase her first KISS CD. Before I even had a chance to write back with a suggestion, she'd written again to say she'd jammed to the Very Best of KISS -- and she wrote a review! For those of you who are fans of KISSfiction but new to KISS, here is her crash course:

I liked "Strutter," their first song, then "C'mon and
Love Me"... not bad. "Rock and Roll All Night" was not
something I'd listen to in the morning, but at four
in the afternoon it was better than a jolt of caffeine.
When "Beth" came on I thought I was listening to another
     group. I really enjoyed it.
One of my favorite memories of my mom is when she bought me the video KISS: The Second Coming for my 32nd birthday and didn't tell me I needed to act my age. Aunt Paula is just as cool.

I'm running on Excedrin Migraine and pure ambition right now. I so much wanted to do nothing today, but I forced myself to get a few things done. I finished the Interview Release forms for the people appearing in the rockumentary and bought lanyards for the front stage passes. Then I tried on a dozen black sweaters before I found the perfect ones. I also bought a furry leopard print hat to top off next weekend's ensemble. I'm wearing it right now, in fact, as I'm sprawled out in my pajamas writing my diary. My cats just shrug their shoulders and yawn.

I designed a shirt logo with R.Kelley's suggestion of a heart with crossed guitar crossbones beneath it. It's not perfect, but pretty cool considering I created it with a word processing program. Problem: my printer doesn't have a mirror image option for the iron-on decals. I'll think about it tomorrow.

Aunt Paula's review is getting excellent feedback. I'll see if she'll send more.

Happy birthday,
QBF.                                 (continued)
